Ireland adds U.S., France, Italy to tough hotel quarantine regime

DUBLIN (Reuters) -Ireland added the United States, Canada, Belgium, France and Italy to its list of countries where arrivals will be subject to mandatory hotel quarantine, tightening some of Europe’s toughest travel restrictions to try to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Ireland, the only one of the European Union’s 27 countries to introduce a hotel quarantine, announced it will also require all arrivals to have booked a COVID-19 test for five days after landing in addition to one taken in the days before travelling.

The Government must “urgently” set out its roadmap for the return of international travel, a group of MPs have demanded.

In an interim report, the cross-party Transport Select Committee urged the officials to reveal “when and how the current quarantine schemes will be phased out”. It added that the aviation industry, which has been largely grounded for the past year, “thrives on certainty” and “redundancies have mounted” as the return of travel overseas “continues to be delayed”.

The government issued a public appeal on Sunday, to trace someone who has been infected with a coronavirus variant first identified in the Brazilian city of Manaus. The unidentified person failed to properly fill out a test registration card, meaning British authorities had no idea who, or where, they are.

Eleven months after the coronavirus pandemic began, the UK government has introduced mandatory hotel quarantine for all arrivals from 33 “high-risk” countries.

The tighter travel restrictions are designed to reduce the introduction and transmission of new variants of the virus.

The strategy of using quarantine hotels or other government-mandated facilities where travellers must self-isolate has already proven successful in other countries including Singapore, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand.
